What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are referred to as third molars by dentists. They were once essential to early human populations since they allowed for improved nutrition because of the way they made chewing and gnawing on dense, coarse foods easier. Nowadays, with more evolved diets and narrower jawlines, these teeth are more of a nuisance than anything else. This is why between the ages of 16 and 25, we often perform wisdom tooth extractions in Grantsville.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Patient with radiating tooth pain

Basically, wisdom teeth need to be removed when they are more harmful than helpful. For example, if there isn’t enough room in your mouth for them to grow in properly, they should be extracted. We also recommend having them taken out if they are impacted beneath the gumline, they are causing you pain, or they increase your risk of serious oral health problems, like cysts and decay. Ultimately, if you are unsure if your wisdom teeth need to be removed, the best thing to do is schedule a consultation with us.

What to Expect from the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

After learning that you need to have your wisdom teeth removed, our doctors will determine which type of procedure is necessary: simple or surgical.

Typically, if your wisdom teeth have partially erupted and are even slightly visible above the gumline, we will use certain dental instruments to grasp the tooth and remove it. Using an elevator to lift the tooth, we will use a gentle back-and-forth motion so that the tooth begins to detach, allowing for a safe, clean removal.

If the wisdom teeth are impacted beneath the gumline, the only way to remove them is to create small incisions in the gums. This exposes the underlying tooth and allows us to section it so that we do not damage the bone while removing each impacted tooth from its sockets.

Following your procedure, you need to get lots of rest and avoid any strenuous activities, like lifting weights. During the healing period, we also recommend:

  • Eating plain yogurt, applesauce, and other soft foods
  • Taking OTC pain medication as directed
  • Keeping your head elevated
  • Using a cold compress for 10 minutes at a time
  • Not smoking or drinking alcohol
  • Drinking water (not with a straw!) to stay hydrated
