Can a Toothache Be Fatal?
September 19, 2024
Having a toothache is never fun. All you want to do is get relief, but many people are simply too busy or too afraid to see the dentist when it happens. Unfortunately, toothaches aren’t like regular injuries, and they won’t typically go away on their own. Worse yet, the longer you go without help, the more serious they could get.
In fact, believing that your tooth pain is “no big deal” can not only be bad for your tooth, but it can also be dangerous for your overall health, too. If left untreated, oral health infections such as abscesses can even be fatal. Here’s why it’s so important to address your toothache as soon as possible.
Toothache Symptoms
Toothaches can strike anyone at any time. They can be caused in patients of all ages by cavities, injury, or tooth infections. In addition to tooth pain, symptoms of a toothache may also include:
- Fever
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Facial swelling
- Dehydration
- Increased heart rate
- Rapid breathing
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Red, swollen gums
Other Risks of Toothache
In addition to the infection becoming potentially fatal, untreated toothaches can lead to the following:
- Tooth loss
- Sepsis
- Meningitis
- Respiratory problems
- Ludwig’s angina
What Do I Do Now?
If you are experiencing any pain and/or any of the above symptoms, it is important that you contact your dentist as soon as possible for next steps. Most likely, you will be scheduled to come in for an urgent appointment. If you cannot reach your dentist or are away from home, visit your nearest emergency room for assistance.
Remember, toothache pain should never be taken lightly. If you are experiencing persistent or throbbing pain for more than 24 hours, contact your dentist immediately to schedule an urgent appointment, or visit your nearest emergency room for help.
